ASKING RITUAL

Ask a person to dance, escort them to the dance floor, embrace (Lead then Follow), dance, leave the embrace, escort your person back to where you got them, thank the person for the dance.

BARRIDA
A sweep of your and/or your partner's foot.

CRUSADA - THE CROSS

A cross done with the feet.

EMBRACE
The "frame" of the dance which includes not only the physical holding, but the energetic sharing of intention and energy of the music, your partner, and the dance.  To many Argentine Tangos dancers more important than any steps one might share with their partner.

PIVOT

All weight on one foot/leg which creates your axis.  A pivot occurs when you are turned (follow) or turn (lead) on your axis.

WAITING

What the lead and follow do for each other.  The follow waits to "hear" & "feel" the energy from the lead to move to the next adventure/step.  The lead waits to see what the follow does with the energy given.  The lead also waits for the music to inspire them to move.

WALKING OUTSIDE

Facing line of dance walking to the outside (toward outside of dance floor) of your follow.

WALKING INSIDE

Facing line of dance walking to the inside (toward inside of dance floor) of your follow.

SANDWICH

When a lead or follow "captures" a foot of their partner with both of their feet.  A playful thing to do.  Usually initiated by the Lead, considered hijacking when initiated by the follow.

HIGHJACKING

When a person who has agreed to follow deliberating takes the lead away from the lead.  This is different from a follow who takes the lead away from the lead unconsciously.

GATHERING
A term used to express the action taken by the follower between most steps.  Imagine that there are magnets in your ankles.  As your feet pass each other going from one step to the next, your ankles will pass close together.  This not only makes your dance/steps look very nice and elegant, it helps your balance and your lead's ability to lead you immensely.
